They call themselves 24/6. Worn out by being tethered to the grid 24/7, sick of being accessible all hours of the day, inundated by updates, upgrades, and breaking news, Americans finally rebel, demanding, “We need a day off.”

People all over the country go offline for 24 hours every week. The simple break from the frenetic pace results in lowered cholesterol levels, fewer speeding tickets, and a reduction in marital strife. Peace, tranquility and contentment spread like wildfire.

–Jamie Korngold, rabbi and author of "The God Upgrade"

What do you think? Any chance of 24/6 coming to fruition?
FYI, this is currently the lead story on CNN.com:

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://blog.adventurerabbi.org/2012/01/cnn-asked-me-to-predict-what-awaits-us.html' title='CNN asked me to predict what awaits us in 2012. Jim Martin is the chaplain for the Colbert Report. He and Rob Bell are two of my clergy heroes (if one can have clergy heroes.) Both are smart, witty, accessible writers who are creating new pathways to religion. I am honored that my book is on this list and doubly honored to be listed amongst authors I so admire.

My book tour has been going really well. Last night I was the keynote speaker at the Austin Jewish Book Festival, where I spoke to a packed house, which included at least 4 rabbis. Tomorrow I’m off to San Diego, then Friday St Louis.

I’ve added a couple of pieces that had taking most of the vitriol out of the reaction to my presentation.

Now, near the beginning I say:

“I should insert a disclaimer here. If you are fortunate to belong to the 30-40% of Americans who are happily involved with synagogue life if you are never tripped up by the descriptions of God in the prayerbook, if you never feel that the concept of God presented in your Jewish practice doesn’t fit with the world as you experience it this book was really not written for you.

I wrote it for your cousin (or brother or neighbor) who wont come to services with you because he cant get past the image of God writing down our deeds in a big book that we hear so much about on Yom Kippur. I wrote it for your friend who thinks the idea of praying for healing is silly and her reaction makes it impossible for her to get glean anything else from a Jewish experience. I wrote it for the people who will not walk in a synagogue, will not read that stack of Jewish books you have next to your bed, will not engage Jewishly because the God they hear about on High Holidays and on Passover, who reviews our lives and rewards and punished us appropriately, who comes down here with an outstretched are to rescue us, makes no sense to them and so they toss out the religion completely. .
My experience is that people who are comfortable with the way God is addressed in their communities find my talk offensive, and to you I apologize now. It may be this talk and this book are not intended for you, but rather for someone you know who you wish could share your Judaism with you, but to whom God has become a stumbling block.”

This seems to convince people that I am not trying to dismantle Judaism. My concern is truly less with people who are happily engaged Jewishly and more with those who are turned off and feel there is no place in Judaism for them.

Anyway, that’s the news from here. I hope to see many of you in the coming week as the tour continues……

The God Upgrade makes Top 10 Publishers Weekly Best Books of 2011!

The God Upgrade makes Top 10 Publishers Weekly Best Books of 2011!We're thrilled that The God Upgrade was just chosen by Publisher's Weekly to be one of the Top 10 Books of the Year:http://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/best-books/2011/religion#book/book-6

Publisher's Weekly Features The God Upgrade, Rob Bell and Ashley Judd

My friends Rob Bell, Ashely Judd and I are reunited again. We felt it was a gentle way to introduce the holiday of Sukkot to families who may be less familiar with this holiday, while at the same time providing a charming story for families who already know about and celebrate the holiday. In addition to portraying the sukkah, we loved the interaction between the brother and sister, and the way they worked together to make the celebration happen.

TWM: Jamie, did you provide any illustrator notes?
JK: I did ask my editor if we could ask Julie to use my children's favorite stuffies in the illustrations. Particularly in stories that involve Jewish holidays and ritual and the artist may not be Jewish, we carefully describe what we’re looking for and often send photos and other art to show what we’re looking for. Art direction includes the edited, but not necessarily final, text laid out in page spreads to the correct size and format for the book. The artist then provides sketches, we comment, and the artist then provides final art.

TWM: Julie, once you receive the text, what is your process?
Julie Fortenberry (JF): I read through the story and the illustration notes from the editor. In this instance Joni sent a few jpegs of sukkahs, and a layout of the text on each page. And she described the action or scene that each two-page illustration needed.

I think the placement and timing of the text worked out wonderfully. The one where Sadie and Ori are taking their friends to the sukkah.

TWM: Jamie and Julie, please tell us how you communicated with each other.
JK: When my publisher told me who was doing the drawings I rushed out and bought Julie's most recent book and I was thrilled so be working with such an expressive illustrator. We finally met month before the book came out, when it had just showed at the Book Expo. It was very exciting to meet each other. We are so proud of our book!
JF: Jamie and I talked on the phone and emailed back and forth a couple of times. She sent some great reference photos of Sadie and Ori and their stuffed animals.

Usually I don't speak with the author until after the project is done. I guess this is standard practice, so that expectations of the author are not a factor in the illustrator’s decision to draw the characters a certain way. But in this case the photos helped. They inspired me to think about the bond between siblings, and the back and forth between a big sister and little sister or brother.

Eventually I met Jamie and the real Sadie and Ori in person.

TWM: Jamie, did the illustration meet your vision? Is there anything you wish Julie had done differently?
JK: I didn't really have a vision, more of a feeling and yes she did meet that completely. I loved the way Julie portrayed the children's personalities. I especially love the picture where Sadie has her arm on Ori's back and Ori "flying" the napkins through the air. She is an exquisite illustrator.

TWM: Now that you have subsequent titles, would you do anything differently?
JK: Nothing! Often the picture can say it better than the words.

TWM: And Julie, as an illustrator, what advice would you give to authors about working with illustrators?
JF: Think in pictures. The more action the better. It doesn't have to be big, or dramatic action, but it should have a variety of emotion and movement. Sadie and Ori make a lot of trips out to that sukkah, and each trip is a little bit different.

TWM: Let’s turn the tables. Jamie, what advice would you give to illustrators about working with authors?
JK: To authors and illustrators: The most important element of making a great book is to trust the publisher. They know more than you and I do about the entire big picture process. Publishers create author/illustrator teams with great care and intention. The most important thing is to trust your publisher and not get in the way of the process.

TWM: And finally, Joni, what advice would you give to authors about illustration and to illustrators about authors?
JS: Authors should concentrate on writing and artists should concentrate on art. We are not looking for art direction from our authors, just a well-written manuscript with a great story line. We don’t expect authors to be art directors and we don’t expect art directors to be editors. Our role as publishers as to create a strong author/artist team for each book and I think we’ve succeeded beautifully with Jamie and Julie’s “Sadie” RH is two weeks away, September 28 and 29, 2011 and people ages 21-30 pay a mere $20 to join us in Winter Park Colorado. The Charles and Lynn Schusterman generously covers the bulk of the costs including lodging, dinning, program fees, services, concerts, guided hikes, and more. Please help us spread the word. It is going to be a great retreat and we don't want anyone to miss out because they didn't know about it. Details and Registration >>

New Review of Sadie's Sukkah Breakfast

My first children's book, Sadie's Sukkah Breakfast, just received a lovely review:

"While Rosh Hashanah and even Yom Kippur find their way into children’s books, Sukkot often gets overlooked. Fortunately, there’s a new preschool book, “Sadie’s Sukkah Breakfast” by Jamie Korngold that we can heartily recommend. In very simple text and watercolor illustrations, Rabbi Korngold tells the story of Sadie and her brother, Ori, who decide to serve breakfast in their family’s sukkah. But after preparing the food and setting the table, they remember that a sukkah celebration needs guests. Young children will love this one."

Copies are for sale at http://www.karben.com/catalog/

Read the review here >>

My latest book: Sadie and the Sukkah Breakfast is Getting Rave Reviews!

Kirkus Reviews:

Sadie and the Sukkah Breakfast

"A resourceful big sister and helpful little brother set up breakfast in the family's newly decorated Sukkah and figure out a way to quietly enjoy it with some good friends while parents sleep. Early risers on this Sukkot morning, Sadie and Ori are very excited, but they know they must not wake their parents. Admiring their decorative handiwork on the Sukkah they built last night, the siblings decide to bring breakfast out to the festive hut. Working together, they prepare a tray:
--"Sadie got the cereal. / Ori got the spoons. / Ori got the bowls. / Sadie got the milk." And when juice, challah rolls, cups and napkins make the tray too heavy, then--"Sadie got the juice. / Ori got the cups. / Ori got the napkins. / Sadie got the challah rolls," each bringing an item out to the Sukkah table, setting up "an elegant breakfast." Seeking to complete the experience with the required invited guests for this holiday meal, Sadie and Ori fill seats at their Sukkah table with a menagerie of favorite stuffed animal friends. Lively, colorful illustrations depict these independently capable preschoolers performing tasks with active joy, care and assurance, deftly matching the unadorned, sprightly text.
Blessings abound for the autumnal holiday, with these happy kids and (behind the scenes) grateful parents."

Publisher's Weekly:
Sadie and her little brother Ori awaken early the morning of Sukkot, the Jewish holiday celebrating the fall harvest. The two have decorated an outdoor sukkah, or harvest booth, and decide to eat breakfast there, a meal the pajama-ed siblings slowly assemble. Then they invite some faithful friends who don't mind waking up early to share their feast. Korngold, a rabbi with an eclectic career, writes her first children's book, and it has a playful sensibility and nice pacing. Fortenberry's soft colors and lines include details that visually pop. The book charmingly teaches a lesson about a holiday and its observance, and is appropriate for religious education as well as family reading time. Ages 2-6. (Sept.)

Available in Hardcover ($16.95) and Paperback ($7.95)

Purchase your copy now at Kar-Ben Publishing>>

Adventure Rabbi Featured in Wall Street Journal - 7-5-2011

Wow! type='text'>Amazing Amazon.com Customer Service Story

Listen to this amazing (and totally fun!) story of what happened when I called Amazon customer service.

I wanted to change the way reviews were showing up on The God Upgrade page. For some reason, they were not in standard format using quotes and italics and it didn't look right.

I logged onto what is called Author Central on Amazon where an author can do all kinds of amazing things with their books, but alas, I couldn't figure out how to add "quotes." So, I clicked on the button that says "have a customer service rep call me."

In THREE second (literally!) my phone rang. "Hi this is Patrick with Amazon. How can I help you?" (Seriously? A real person and in 3 seconds?)

"Hi, my name is Jamie Korngold. I'm the author The God Upgrade." He asks me a couple of questions to make sure it is really the author and not some hacker and then he says,

"Didn't I hear you on the radio a couple of years ago? We're you on the show Too Jewish? Aren't you that camping rabbi?"

"Yes that was me!" (You can imagine my surprise. Meanwhile, in my mind I'm scrolling through all the radio shows I did for God in the Wilderness, my first book and am trying to figure out what show it was.)

He continued "I love Rabbi Cohon's show. " (With Rabbi Cohon's name I can figure out the show.)"

"He has a great show." I say.

Patrick continues: "Rabbi Cohon is in Tucson and I am in Illinois but I never miss a show. I loved your interview so much I listen to it on my ipod while I mow the lawn."

(Can you imagine my face while he is saying all this?)

And then he switches gears:

"Now how can I help you?"

And it won't surprise you dear reader to know he made those changes in about 2 seconds flat.

The God Upgrade now #1 Best Selling Book in Denver, Colorado

According to the Denver Post, Rabbi Jamie Korngold's book, The God Upgrade, now #1 Best Selling Book in Denver, Colorado:

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;
